Modern Weapon of Choice: Assault Loam

Modern Weapon of Choice: Assault Loam     I know it is not the greatest Magic card ever, but it serves a role from time to time. Standard Burn plays a few, but should always have slightly better options than playing the full set. That being said, if I asked if you wanted to play 28 of them in Modern you would probably look at me like I was crazy. After all, the Burn deck in that format plays about that many Lightning Bolts. Why would you ever want Shock instead? Well, what if I told you you could...

Seizing Thoughts

Seizing Thoughts             Thoughtseize is clearly one of the most powerful spells in today’s Standard. Some people think it was a mistake to reprint it and others bemoan the fact that they constantly have to play against it. Still, I do not believe complaining about it is going to do anything to change the fact that it’s here until rotation next October unless it gets to the point that people stop playing events as they did during the Standard reign of Arcbound Ravager and friends. Even then, Wizards did not take any action against the deck until it had...

How do I lose?

How Do I Lose? Recently there have been a few articles on other sites focusing on fundamentals. One of the major points in any of these articles is that you should have a plan for how to win the game that informs your decisions throughout the game. This seems rather obvious, but it is not difficult to lose focus and simply play on auto-pilot generating plays that looked at in isolation might make sense but are at odds with one another given the way the game has progressed. When formulating such a plan, you usually ask yourself, “How...

More Lessons Learned: Classic in Charlotte

Another weekend, another road trip, another Standard event. This time the trip was much shorter, only requiring a short hop up to Charlotte with no hotel stays. The event was an SCG Classic. There were 271 players, though I heard the PTQ in Greenville, SC that we had driven past only had something like 40. I guess I’m not the only one that would rather play constructed than sealed. Heading into the event I was still very confident with the BR list I had piloted in Indianapolis. For reference here is the list: Black/RedMaindeck: (60)15 Swamp4 Blood Crypt2 Rakdos Guildgate3 Mutavault1 Nykthos, Shrine...
