Did you know?

Foil Stonehewer Giant from Morningtide is $18.00! This card has been great in commander for a long time, and his price actually used to be higher, but I wanted to point out how bad the reprint in Modern Masters was for the price of this card. A foil Modern Masters version is just $8.00; it’s over twice as much just for the expansion symbol! Now if the picture had been updated to something way more awesome, you’d see a better price for the Modern Masters version like we noticed with the Swords yesterday. But if there isn’t better art? You’re way better off holding foils than the regular copy. Here’s a chart of what happened to the price of the non-foil when Modern Masters came out:

So if there is a card you want in your portfolio, but are worried about a reprint, get a foil version. It’s way more safe from reprints. Fetchlands are probably the hottest reprint topic right now. Some people are avoiding them if at all possible because they know a reprint is coming (and I’m sure it is), but foils will be relatively safe. I wish I had a chart for you of the foil Stonehewer Giants from Morningtide to illustrate this further, but I don’t.

Did you know?

Foil Ghost Quarter from Dissension is $18.00! Holy cow! Non foil copies are just $1.50; that’s quite the multiplier! It’s no surprise that this sees play in modern, and to a much lesser extend commander, but wasn’t this reprinted in Innistrad? It sure was, but the foil Innistrad copy is just $6.00. Let’s get the obvious out of the way first: There’s probably around 10 times more copies of foil Ghost Quarters from Innistrad than there are from Dissension. Magic has grown a lot in the time between Dissension and Innistrad, and Dissension was a 3rd set while Innistrad was a 1st set. How about the art? The first one seems considerably better to me, and most players would agree.

The next time a foil reprint comes around, and you are wondering if you should jump in, consider the art and the border. If it’s a definite upgrade, the upside can be huge. If not, you  may just want to stay away from it.
