Spell Pierce, a common from Zendikar, is $3.00! This usually shows up as a 2-of in some tempo decks in modern and legacy; not a ton of play. On the other hand, Delver of Secrets shows up as a 4-of in most of those same modern and legacy decks and is only $1.00. The difference? Zendikar is a few years older, and those few years actually make a pretty big difference because the player base was exploding back then. The player base is still growing, so picking up some extra delvers might not be such a bad idea at $1.00 each.

Utopia Sprawl, a common from Dissension, is $3.00! This card is played even less than Spell Pierce, but it’s older and scarcer and thus hard to find. It does see play as a 4-of, but I don’t think there are nearly as many green devotion decks out there as delver decks. This is more valuable than most rares in sets these days, and it started out as a 15-cent common. It was never regarded as a good common during its days in standard. You’d have to pick up a ton of these at .15 to see significant gains, but it’s really hard to beat the 2,000% gain!
I actually have my eye on a common that could pull a similar stunt: Faithless Looting. It’s from the same block as Delver of Secrets in a less opened set, and if you’re playing a graveyard centric deck that’s willing to play red, it’s in there as a 4-of. Lots of people love graveyard decks. Not only does it see some tournament success from time to time, but casuals love those types of decks too. At only a quarter, the price is right. I can see these being $1 each within a few years. It’s not what I would call a glorious pay off, but it’s hard to beat the percentages and I feel that this call is pretty sure to hit. I wouldn’t worry about the duel deck or IDW printing hurting the chances of this going up; those printings didn’t add that much to the pool. I am personally hoarding these and recommend that you do the same. People don’t usually pack these in their binders for trade, so you’ll need to be a bit more creating in picking them up. If you belong to one of the online trade sites, listing this in your wants as a trade evener is a good method to employ.
I know I mentioned foil Spell Pierce and foil Faithless Looting recently, but these cards were worth mentioning again in their non-foil forms.
