Did you know?

Foil Tolaria West is a $25 uncommon! How much play does this even see? I recall seeing it in some lists to search up a land or an Engineered Explosives, but I don’t recall the last time I saw someone playing this in their list. These days commander is the more likely home.

Did you know?

Foil Dryad Arbor from Future Sight is $25! Last I checked, regular copies from Future Sight were $3. Apparently that price is out of date, as it’s now $7. The FTV Realms version is $12, so I guess these are kind of expensive now.

Did you know?

Foil Gavony Township is $15! Back when these were standard legal, you practically couldn’t give Gavony Townships away. Regular copies retailed for $1.50, and nobody needed them despite seeing play in competitive standard decks. Innistrad only rotated out a little over 6 months ago, and Melira Pod was already playing this back then. Did literally everybody sell these off for rotation? How could these rise so fast? Perhaps Modern has really picked up a lot as a format since then. Regular copies are $4 now. Although I never would have guessed that Modern would be the reason that Gavony Townships went up, luckily I thought that GW commander decks would want foil copies, so I picked up about a dozen foil copies when they were still $5 each.

What’s the lesson here? Special lands that do something unique and interesting can spike pretty hard. This is why I went deep on Inkmoth Nexus. Every deck that wants to play infect will run 4, and Affinity runs 4. Even a deck without infect as a main theme can win out of nowhere with a land and a powerful piece of equipment.

Going forward, I think Thespian’s Stage has some room to grow. Foil copies are already $15 due to legacy play with Dark Depths, and even if it falls out of favor in legacy it will likely retain most of that price, but regular copies are fair game for some slow growth. A more interesting target is Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx. It’s probably too soon to be picking these up. They are down a bit right now since we are flush with copies right now, and at this point we just don’t know if the next block will offer support for it, but I feel that the floor for Nykthos will still be a bit lower at some time it rotates. When that point nears, foil copies will be fantastic targets. Nykthos can definitely see play in modern, and more importantly will be a fantastic spec for commander. The payoff is quite a ways off, but definitely keep these on your radar for the future.
